Jumping from one event to the next, I have just returned from the International Studies Association conference in New Orleans, and will be speaking again this Friday at Anshe Sholom’s Israel Dinner. A description of the talk and a link for more information can be found below:
National Heritage Sites and the “Peace Process”
PM Bibi Netanyahu’s announcement on Sunday that the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Rachel’s Tomb would be included in a 400 Million NIS plan to “rehabilitate and strengthen” Israel’s national heritage infrastructures has come under intense Israeli domestic, Palestinian, and international scrutiny. UN representatives have asserted that the sites are in “occupied Palestinian territory” and that such moves could undermine the peace process while Palestinian leaders in both Fatah and Hamas have threatened to start a new intifada. Join us in a discussion that cuts through the rhetoric exploring what implications this move will have for the status of these sites, Israel’s relationship with the Palestinians, and the moribund peace process.
